Are you a young, visually impaired person eager to make a difference with your work while experiencing life abroad and making lifelong memories? Join us!
We are looking for one volunteer between 18 and 30 years old to join our IRHOV project within the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Programme in Liège, Belgium. This unique project will allow you to work closely with youth with visual impairments, enriching your own experience and making a significant impact.
About IRHOV
The Institut Royal pour les handicapés de l’Ouïe et de la Vue (IRHOV) comprises two specialised schools for youth aged 3 to 21 with visual and hearing impairments.
IRHOV is dedicated to innovative projects in both formal and non-formal education, incorporating sports and cultural activities tailored to the needs of those with sensory impairments.
What will you do at IRHOV?
During your volunteering experience at IRHOV, you will be involved in many different activities that significantly benefit the students and their families. You will have the opportunity to:
-
- Support extracurricular activities, acting as a bridge between those organising extracurricular activities (e.g.like sports, theatre and reading sessions) and the students;
-
- Actively participate in the students’ learning path, collaborating with children and youth students of all ages to support them with learning Braille and how to use assistive technologies;
-
- Raise awareness and facilitate understanding, helping others understand visual impairment and inclusive practices for visually impaired youth, also with the help of specific materials;
-
- Promote positive perceptions, presenting a positive image of visual impairment to students from mainstream schools and fostering a more inclusive mindset.
What’s in it for you?
Volunteering with IRHOV is also about personal and professional growth. You will develop skills such as:
-
- Braille proficiency: Learn or improve your Braille reading and writing skills.
-
- Assistive technology: Get hands-on experience with assistive technologies that support visually impaired individuals.
-
- Interpersonal skills: Enhance your ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, including working with multicultural neighbours and housemates.
Who we are looking for:
We are seeking visually impaired individuals aged between 18 and 30 with a beginner level of French (A2). If you are motivated and eager to be actively involved in the working team, and strive for autonomy in your daily life, you are a perfect fit for this ESC project. Essential qualities include openness, good listening skills, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.
